Every now and then when I’m being interviewed or speaking to another entrepreneur, I am asked what I did to grow my business. Well, honestly I’m still building and growing my business. I think that’s the first thing to understand about business is that the moment you stop growing and doing the work, you stop making money.
Being an entrepreneur is a lot like running a race – your strategy, focus and actions will determine how you finish. If you begin the race without a strategy and no focus you run the risk of getting injured or worse yet, not finishing at all. Even with a clear strategy and focus you run the risk of not finishing if you let your fears stop you.
So, what did I do and continue to do to grow my business?
First, I don’t let fear stop me. I recognize that it doesn’t go away and that as my business continues to grow, new fears will surface. I’m okay with that because it just means that I’m playing bigger.
One fear that keeps many entrepreneurs playing small is the fear of rejection, more specifically, the fear of asking for the money and closing the sale. If all we needed was a website with a buy now button we’d all be rich, it takes more than that. Whether you’re marketing online or offline, you have to talk to people. When you hide behind your computer and avoid talking about your products and services, you hide from the money.
Secondly, I continue to do the work – day in and day out. And I take full responsibility for my business results. If I miss my revenue and profit goals for the month, I don’t blame my team or others, I blame me. It’s not about finding fault, it’s about creating a plan to ensure we stay on track to hit the goals.
