Being an entrepreneur is a lot like running a race – your strategy, focus and actions will determine how you finish. If you begin the race without a strategy and no focus you run the risk of getting injured or worse yet, not finishing at all.
Before I get into the #1 strategy I use to grow my business, I want to first share my business philosophy. Many people will tell you it takes money to make money. I used to believe that until I realized that it wasn’t about the money. I believe that it doesn’t take money to make money, it takes action – consistent action.
The top strategy I have used and continue to use in my business to consistently increase my income is picking up the phone. Social media has brainwashed many business owners into believing that posting online is all it takes. The truth is, it really depends on your business and your goals. But if you want to stay top of mind and stand out from the crowd, then pick up the phone. It’s a great way to build relationships faster and shorten the sales cycle.
Please, please don’t assume that having a Facebook page means that your ideal client knows about you and your business. They don’t. You have to be very intentional about letting your ideal client know what you do.
Early on in my business, I worked really hard to avoid picking up the phone. I wasn’t making cold calls yet and still I didn’t want to pick up the phone. But, why? It was my beliefs. My beliefs about making calls made the experience appear scarier than it really was. I’m sure the telemarketing job I had in college had something to do with my beliefs about making phone calls.
I can remember making a call and sharing information about one of my programs without spending enough time to understand whether or not this person was a good fit or even my ideal client. I wasn’t prepared. I didn’t go to her website. I didn’t check her social media profile. I didn’t use a script. I needed to develop a sales system and process so my phone calls wouldn’t be so scary.
Picking up the phone has made the biggest difference in my business and my bottom line. And it will change your business results and profits too, if you have a solid plan and system.
