Earl Nightingale said “people with goals succeed because they know where they’re going”. Bill Copeland said, “the trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score”. In my opinion, achieving your goals isn’t hard to do at all. It’s actually very easy if you implement the 3 keys.
Key #1 – Your goals must be written. If they exist in your head only, there’s a good chance you’ll forget them. If you’ve generated $20k in one year in your business don’t set a goal to generate $100k the next year if you don’t have a realistic, written plan to make that happen. The goal of $100k isn’t the problem. The problem is your mindset. Set a goal that is realistic. It should stretch you not stress you. Elevate your thinking and dispel any limiting beliefs and thoughts that keep you from moving forward. Recommendation: Create a goals book / journal and keep it where you can see it daily – in the morning and at night before you go to bed.
Key #2 and Key #3 – You must take action (key #2) – consistently! Writing down your goals just isn’t enough to achieve them. And taking action once or twice won’t get the job done. You must be consistent (key #3). Yes, you may encounter an obstacle here and there but you’re not supposed to stop. You’re supposed to find your way over, through or around it. If you stop each and every time you face an obstacle, you’ll just have to keep starting over. Consistent action creates results. If the result isn’t what you had in mind, then choose a different route. Recommendation: When you look at your goals each morning, ask yourself what can I do today to move closer to achieving this goal.
It’s never too late to set and achieve your goals. Don’t limit your ability to have the success and business you want by writing your goals once a year. And don’t allow what hasn’t happened in the past limit what you can create in the future, right now.
What I like most about these keys is that they describe a mindset. The person must make a decision to be accountable for his/herself. Like you said, goals shouldn’t be completed once a year, goal setting needs to become a habit. Then, it is necessary to commit to achieving those goals. But what do you do if you have exhausted your level of talent? Basically, if you execute these keys but are stuck at a stand still because of the things you don’t know. How do you pinpoint what is holding you back?
