I must confess prior to a few months ago I had absolutely no idea who Cardi B was – absolutely none. Unless you’re a reality TV fan you’re probably just like me – you didn’t know who she was either. And maybe as you read this you’re thinking, “who is she”?
Well, I’ll give you a brief, brief summary of who she is. Cardi B is a 25 year old, ex-stripper and Reality TV star turned rapper from Bronx, NY. Big deal, right? It is in the music industry. Especially when you make history by topping the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and knocking Taylor Swift out of the no. 1 spot. Yes, that’s a big deal.
Now, you may be thinking what can entrepreneurs and small business owners possibly learn from an ex-stripper and Reality TV star.
The short answer – a lot! But I’m only going to highlight a few characteristics in this article and I’ll share more in Part II.
One of the biggest statements that has kept many dreamers from becoming business owners is, “it takes money to make money”. I don’t believe that.
Here’s what I believe… “It doesn’t take money to make money, it takes action – consistent action.” I watched my family build a business with no money and that business has created many more businesses for my family as a result.
Ok, back to Cardi.
Cardi is no stranger to taking consistent action. She didn’t sit back and just dream about the life she wanted, she did something about it. She took action. It didn’t matter that she didn’t have all the answers. It didn’t matter that there were already other female rappers in the market. How many times have you thought or said, “someone else is already doing this”. That didn’t matter to Cardi and it shouldn’t matter to you either. Cardi took her dream and made it a reality.
The second thing that business owners can learn from Cardi B is what I’ll call flipping the script. If you read her story you’ll understand what I mean when I say she turned a negative situation (and environment) into a positive one. You may not consider being a rapper a good thing but compared to a past that included drugs and an abusive relationship, I think you’ll agree. On top of that, she was poor. But she didn’t let those things stop her. She didn’t allow those experiences to keep her from taking action. Actually, she used them to fuel her dreams and bring them to life.
Cardi B had many reasons to believe she wouldn’t make it but she didn’t let her past or what she didn’t have keep her from creating ground breaking success.
So tell me, why can’t you turn your goals into the reality you desire? If a young girl from the Bronx with no money, no college education and a long list of other negative experiences can create a life that many dream of, why can’t you?
I believe you can.
