When we don’t hit the goals we set, our brains naturally want to make sense of it. We give ourselves reasons, excuses and justifications for why we didn’t or couldn’t make it happen. It’s our nature, and most of the time our brains do this on autopilot. They trap us into thinking we don’t have the power to change it and that circumstances or confusion or lack of resources were the real issues. But this isn’t a reality.
These “poor” ideas are typically formed and nurtured in childhood (although don’t let that be an excuse or hold you back). I merely say this to point out that we have usually been in this habit for a long time. And one of the main reasons I created the free 7-day Make it Rain 2015 challenge was to help you begin to think differently about how to create profit in your business.
Here are the top three traps struggling business owners make –
- The “I’m Really Busy” Trap: Oftentimes, people think that because they are busy they will automatically make money or that they should be making more because they’re working more. But that’s not how it works. If you’re not making the kind of revenue you want in your business it’s likely because you’re spending a lot of time doing the wrong things. The challenge comes in learning what your most important business actions are on a daily and weekly basis. These are totally unique to your business and designing your strategic action plan probably accounts for 75% of the most important work I do with clients.
- The “I’m Waiting For X” Trap: The second biggest trap I see people walk right into is placing their responsibility on someone else or somewhere off in the future. They’re waiting on feedback from a coach, a program to start, to find the right person to hire, to get their website up, etc. YOU are the CEO of your company and life and you can’t wait on these things to line up in perfect order before you go out and take action. The truth is, you don’t even need a website to make money. Certainly not a fancy one. Is it helpful? Yes. Can it support your sales? You betcha. But plenty of people have made millions with no website or even a terrible looking website. Every day you push your “profit goals” off is another day you’re losing big time money and momentum.
- The “Pie in the Sky” Trap: This last trap is a big one. I’m ALL for dreaming big. Really big. But I see people set completely unrealistic expectations, huge unattainable goals in unrealistic time frames. I’ll hear, “Shontaye, I’m going to make $30,000 this month.” But when you look at the last three months, they’re barely clearing $5,000. In order to hit the 30K monthly goal, we need time to set up the proper structure to make it happen. When people habitually set these goals and do not give themselves the proper time to reach them, they become disheartened, lose interest and mentally they can’t bring themselves to be disappointed time and time again. This really puts people at the biggest risk of failure because they’re close to giving up.
Let’s make this year different. Let me show you how to navigate around these three traps and create your most profitable year yet.
