Does goal setting really work? Yes, if you work the goals. It’s not enough to sit down at the beginning of the year and write out your goals. You must be in action toward your goals. Without intentional action, you can’t expect the future you desire to magically become your reality. Goal setting is a key strategy to developing a success mindset.
Goal setting allows you to design and live your life on purpose. It moves your life forward versus running in place expecting the scenery to change. Setting goals is like taking a blank canvas and painting a picture of what you wish to see created in your life, your business or your career. One of the challenges of goal setting is silencing the negative self talk. You know that voice in your head that starts telling you all the reasons why we can’t possibly achieve your goals. It’s not an external circumstance or situation that stops us from living our dreams…we stop ourselves!
I remember sitting down to write my goals and hearing the voice in my head. “How are you going to do that?” “Don’t put that on the list, it’s hard.” I kept writing. Eventually the voice was silenced and my mindset shifted from doubt to confidence. I reminded myself of the moment I completed a half marathon on a cold, windy, rainy day. Before the event began, thoughts of defeat and doubt filled my mind. I didn’t know how I was going to accomplish this goal. And just as I was completing Mile 1, a fellow runner hands me a piece of paper. On that piece of paper was the following scripture, Matthew 28:20 “And be sure of this, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” In that moment, I knew that the power within me would carry me across the finish line and it did.
So despite the negative self talk, you get to decide how you finish 2012. There’s a power within you greater than any external circumstance if you trust and believe in your ability to have what your heart desires. So, will you cross the finish line? Or will you just throw in the towel? You have an unlimited supply of power and potential waiting on you to call it forth.
One day I read a message that said not setting goals in and of itself is a goal. I thought, wow! If you decide not to change, improve or grow, you’ve set a goal to remain the same. Think about it. Is that really what you desire for your life, your business or your career?
Grab a pen and paper and begin painting the picture of yourself crossing the finish line. It’s your year and time to finish strong!
